This evaluation of the Wellbeing and Health In-Reach Nurse (WHIN) Coordinator Program examines a NSW model that places wellbeing nurses in schools to identify health and social concerns and connect students and families with appropriate health and community services.

The evaluation found that the model became embedded in the participating schools and communities, with nurses developing relationships with school staff, health services and community organisations. The program supported almost 800 people across the three pilot sites and addressed a broad range of needs, including mental health, physical health, social and behavioural issues and complex family circumstances.

The evaluation highlights the value of having health expertise accessible within schools, particularly for students whose health and wellbeing needs can affect their education. It also identified challenges, including the complexity of some cases, the need for clearer clinical governance and scope of practice, and the importance of adequate support for nurses working outside traditional health settings. The findings support stronger collaboration between schools, health services and community organisations as a way of identifying concerns early and helping students access appropriate support.
